During the week of November 11-17, 2017, the National Geographic Society will sponsor Geography Awareness Week. Since 1987, the National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children.  This event is intended to promote the understanding of geography in schools around the world. 

GIS Day is part of the National Geographic Society’s exciting initiative, Geography Action!  Geography Action!  is a yearlong initiative encompassing key educational achievements such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week. 

Wednesday, November 15, 2017, has been selected as GIS Day. GIS, or geographic information systems, represents computer software, data, and solutions that are used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide in government, education, and business.  The goal of GIS Day is to help educate children as well as adults on the applications of geography and computer-aided mapping.  GIS Day is a global event for thousands of users of GIS technology to educate the public and demonstrate GIS technology at schools and organizations around the world.  To learn more about GIS Day and all of the exciting events planned, please feel free to visit the GIS Day Web site at www.gisday.com.
